Fiber optic jobs are paid pretty well, depending on their experience and where in the US they work. The map below, from a US Department of
Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics web page of data on "line installers" which includes fiber optics, shows the distribution of wages in the US. This
map includes all telecom line installers which includes both copper and fiber, but it gives good relative data to where wages are higher and lower.

The Fiber Splicer  is responsible for the maintenance and installation of new and existing fiber in an inside and outside plant environment.

Primary Responsibilities:
•        Ability to prep and splice fiber via mechanical fusion methods
•        Ability to splice large count fibers via tube or ribbon method
•        Ability to access the fiber optic splicer enclosure and splice the necessary fibers directly from a ladder
•        Able to troubleshoot and repair problems utilizing optical test equipment such as OTDR, Fiber Identifier and Fiber Scope
•        Prep, tray, and splice fiber optic cable ranging from single fiber to 288 count as well as perform ring cut when needed
•        Perform testing and turn-ups of subscriber drops in both inside and outside plant environment
•        Perform power meter testing
•        All other duties as required

•        High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent
combination of education and experience.

•        Knowledge of operating and using fiber optic splice equipment
•        Knowledge of fiber optic theory which includes fiber loss, connector types and the different types of fibers

Technical Skills:
•        Ability to read splicing matrix and design drawings
•        Ability to utilize MS Excel or equivalent to document and retrieve splice information
•        Ability to operate a bucket truck

Soft Skills:
•        Highly organized and detail orientated
•        Ability to detect errors, determine causes, and make corrections as appropriate
•        Ability to multi-task and work in a fast paced environment
•        Ability to comprehend, process and apply both verbal and written skills appropriate to the job

Physical Requirements:
•        Must be able to pass pre-employment screening that includes background and drug testing
•        Individuals must have a valid driver's license and driving record meeting the company policy conditions
•        Must be in good physical condition with the ability to stoop, crawl, bend at the knees and waist, squat and lift 50 lbs; includes body
weight, equipment, tools and boxes
•        Must be able to stand for long periods of time on varied surfaces
•        May be required to work long and unpredictable hours • Position requires working outdoors in all types of weather
•        Ability to climb and work at elevations (e. g. from ladders, poles, lift trucks) exceeding 18 feet
•        Ability to work in confined spaces (e. g. attics, crawl spaces, utility holes)

Position Summary:
Accurately and safely installs, maintains and services customer premises equipment.  Typically installs drop wires, station protectors and network
interface devices and performs initial wiring or rewiring for new subscriber systems. Places and maintains cable within underground conduit systems.
Installs and removes aerial wires.  Also work at the business office, repairing customer premise equipment (CPE) dropped off by customers.   
Markets, sells, installs, repairs and maintains IPTV and equipment on customer’s premises.  Explains service fees and operations to customers.
Courteously responds to customers’ inquiries and complaints.   

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
        Knowledge of (or ability to learn) basic electronics, specification sheets and circuit diagrams; telecommunications plant equipment operations
and maintenance.
        Ability to understand local exchange distribution network facilities, company products, services, policies and procedures.
        Safely and effectively uses service equipment including various hand tools and testing equipment.
        Skilled in operating typical office equipment, software programs and telephone systems.
        Skilled in installing fiber products and services.
        Excellent oral and written communication skills, to communicate with customers, co-workers and various business contacts in a professional
and courteous manner
        Ability to effectively function as a team player and pay close attention to detail
        Must read and interpret documents: maps, staking sheets, operating & maintenance instruction manuals.   
        Ability to evaluate, test and repair sophisticated equipment; as well as improve or redesign procedures for specific installation/repair problems.
        Ability to work independently and make sound technical decisions using information at hand.

Working Conditions:    Somewhat continuous exposure to one or more of weather and/or traffic related elements like dust, fumes, vibration, noise,
wetness &/or heat.  Exposed to one element continuously or several elements occasionally, but usually not at the same time.
