Role Summary
The Fiber Technician-Data Center is responsible for the installation, fusion splicing, termination, testing, and troubleshooting of fiber optic cables in various environments, inside a data center.
Key Responsibilities
Splicing & Termination: Perform high-quality fusion splicing on single-mode and multi-mode fiber optic cables (loose tube and ribbon).
Testing & Troubleshooting: Use OTDR (Optical Time Domain Reflectometer), Power Meters, and Light Sources to test fiber paths, identify faults (breaks, bends, bad splices), and ensure signal continuity.
Technical Documentation: Read and interpret splice schematics, network maps, and engineering field notes. Provide accurate, daily documentation of all splicing and testing results.
Operations: Prepare fiber for splicing by stripping cables, cleaning fibers, and installing splice trays and enclosures.
Maintenance: Perform emergency repairs.
Required Skills & Qualifications
Education: High school diploma or equivalent. Technical certification in telecommunications is a plus.
Technical Expertise: Experience using fusion splicers (e.g., Fujikura, Sumitomo) and specialized hand tools will be valuable. Experience working in data centers is a plus. Additional project specific training will be provided.
Analytical Skills: Ability to calculate fiber attenuation values and interpret complex OTDR traces.
Physical Dexterity: Excellent manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination for handling fragile glass fibers.
Safety Mindset: Strict adherence to OSHA standards, fiber handling safety (shards/lasers), and traffic control protocols.
Working Conditions & Physical Requirements
Travel: Initially will be local to the Columbus, OH area. Ability to travel up to 100% to various client sites as assigned.
Environments: Work will be primarily in indoor climate controlled environment.
Physical Demands: Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, climb ladders, and stand or kneel for extended periods.

FOA Certified Fiber Optic Technician (CFOT)
Certified Fiber Optics Specialist in Splicing (CFOS/S)
OSHA 10 or 30 Construction Safety
